Esiste un film, realizzato prima della saga di Join The Evil, sempre diretto dal regista Davide Santandrea, che potrebbe essere il Rebot di il “Cottage 1”. Parliamo di Horror in The Wood che permise la realizzazione della saga Join The Evil

HORROR IN THE WOOD  VS  JOIN THE EVIL 

Esiste un film intitolato “Horror in The Wood”, realizzato nell'agosto del 2020, in Italia conosciuto come “Unisciti a noi nel nome del sangue” che il regista Davide Santandrea ha girato e prodotto prima della saga cinematografica “Join The Evil” ma che a tutti gli effetti può essere inserito nella saga come un “rebot” O forse “Join The Evil” potrebbe essere il rebot di “Horror in The Wood”. Ma andiamo con ordine e partiamo dall’inizio. Nella mente del regista era già presente il progetto di “Join The Evil” ma durante le riprese del primo film, “Horror the Wood” appunto, qualcosa andò storto. Durante le riprese ci furono delle incomprensioni tra il regista e l’operatore di ripresa Chris Fx che era anche il direttore della fotografia di quel film, tant’è che il film alla fine prese una “piega” diversa da quello che aveva in mente il regista. Tuttavia il regista decise comunque di approvare “Horror In The Wood” che alla fine fu utilizzato come “biglietto da visita” per un progetto più ampio quale sarebbe stato “Join The Evil”. Nel film in effetti vediamo alcune “basi” ed effetti che saranno poi riutilizzati in “Join The Evil”, ad esempio: il quadro dei bambini che piangono sangue, lo spirito demone che corre a raso terra nel bosco, il libro di kutu, il demone che si alza da terra, la sedia a dondolo; ma la cosa che più accomuna “Horror in The Wood” a “Join The Evil” è il principio del film, ovvero la storia del professore archeologo che scopre le tavolette di Kutu. In entrambi i due film abbiamo il professore che entra nelle grotte sotto il tempio di Kut-Al-Amara nell’Iraq meridionale, trova le tavolette sumere e le porta al suo cottage per tradurle e scrivere il libro di kutu.

E’ da questo momento che la storia si diversifica e prende due strade diverse. In “Horror The Wood” il professore archeologo Pedro Caranza è sposato con la moglie Abelina ma non ha figli, o almeno nel film non ci sono. Qui il professore è un uomo senza scrupoli, è affascinato dal contenuto delle tavolette e decide di diventare un demone, o meglio dire essere posseduto dal demone di cui parlano le tavolette. Per ottenere questo pratica un rito sanguinario e sacrificale uccidendo la moglie Abelina. In “Horror The Wood” il professore è per tanto un essere spietato che, pur di raggiungere il suo scopo e ottenere ciò che desidera, non ha scrupoli a compiere anche un assassinio. Invece in “Join The Evil” troviamo il professore archeologo Caranza sotto un altro aspetto: una persona dedita alle sue ricerche e ai suoi studi, che trova le tavolette, le traduce e diventa vittima del libro stesso che ha scritto. Infatti nel controllare se quanto scritto nel libro corrispondesse alla traduzione giusta delle tavolette sumere, legge inconsapevolmente una formula maledetta che permette allo spirito demoniaco Azathoth, re del caos, di possederlo.

Il professore Caranza di Join The Evil è una persona che alla fine cerca di rimediare all’errore che ha fatto, suicidandosi per fermare Azathoth, ignaro che lo spirito demone può possedere anche il corpo dei morti. In Join The Evil la figura sacrificale della moglie non c’è ma ci sono i tre figli: Il figlio maggiore Vincent, e i due figli minori Eric e Shelly. Eric e Shelly sono i due figli che si trovano a scontare le conseguenze del Libro di Kutu. Mentre Vincent è colui che diventa l'eroe che sconfigge le forze del male. Anche sotto l’aspetto cinematografico i due film “Horror in the wood” e “Join The Evil” appaiono diversi tra loro: il primo è esplicitamente ed esclusivamente un horror. Il secondo mantiene le caratteristiche di un film horror pur adottando alcuni aspetti comici legati soprattutto al personaggio di Vincent Ascia e al suo modo di affrontare i morti viventi e i demoni. 

HORROR IN THE WOOD  VS  JOIN THE EVIL

 There is a movie titled "Horror in The Wood", built in august 2020, known in Italy as "Join us in the name of blood", that the director Davide Santandrea filmed and produced before the "Join The Evil" film series, but can effectively be inserted into the series as a "prequel". Or, perhaps "Join The Evil" could be considered a prequel to "Horror in The Wood". But, let's start from the beginning. The director already had the idea for "Join The Evil" when filming began on the first film, "Horror in The Wood". During filming, there were misunderstandings between the director and the cinematographer, who was also the director of photography, resulting in the film taking a different direction than the one envisioned by the director. Nevertheless, the director decided to approve "Horror in The Wood", which ultimately served as a "calling card" for a larger project, which would be "Join The Evil". In fact, the film features some "basics" and effects that will be reused in "Join The Evil", such as: the painting of crying children with blood, the demon spirit running close to the ground in the woods, the Kutu book, the demon rising from the ground, the rocking chair; but the thing that connects "Horror in The Wood" and "Join The Evil" the most is the principle of the film, namely the story of the archaeologist professor who discovers the Kutu tablets. In both films, we have the professor entering caves under the temple of Kut-Al-Amara in southern Iraq, finding the Sumerian tablets, and bringing them to his cottage to translate and write the Kutu book. 

From this moment on, the story diverges and takes two different paths. In "Horror The Wood," the archaeology professor Pedro Caranza is married to his wife Abelina but does not have any children, or at least, they are not present in the film. Here, the professor is an unscrupulous man who is fascinated by the contents of the tablets and decides to become a demon, or rather, to be possessed by the demon spoken of in the tablets. He performs a bloody and sacrificial ritual to achieve this, killing his wife Abelina. In "Horror The Wood," the professor is a ruthless being who will go to any lengths, even committing murder, to achieve his goal and obtain what he desires. On the other hand, in "Join the Evil," we find the archaeology professor Caranza in a different light - as someone dedicated to his research and studies, who finds the tablets, translates them, and becomes a victim of the very book he wrote. In fact, while checking if what he wrote in the book corresponds to the correct translation of the Sumerian tablets, he unwittingly reads a cursed formula that allows the demonic spirit of Azathoth, king of chaos, to possess him. 

The Join The Evil professor Caranza is someone who ultimately tries to rectify the mistake he made by committing suicide to stop Azathoth, unaware that the demon spirit can possess even the bodies of the dead. In Join The Evil, there is no sacrificial wife figure, but instead, there are three children: the eldest son Vincent and the two younger children Eric and Shelly. Eric and Shelly are the two children who suffer the consequences of the Book of Kutu. Meanwhile, Vincent becomes the hero who defeats the forces of evil. Even from a cinematic standpoint, the two films "Horror in the Wood" and "Join The Evil" appear different from each other. The first is explicitly and exclusively a horror film while the second maintains the characteristics of a horror film while adopting some comedic aspects related mainly to the character of Vincent Axe and his way of dealing with the undead and demons. 

THE PLOT OF THE MOVIE

Archaeology professor Pedro Caranza discovers ancient Sumerian tablets belonging to the ancient Kutu sect in the caves beneath the ruins of the Kut-Al-Amara temple in southern Iraq. He takes the tablets to his cottage, translates them and puts the translations into a book he writes called the "Book of Kutu". Fascinated by a bloody sacrificial ritual described in the tablets, which gives anyone who does it the chance to be possessed by a demon, the professor decides to perform it and sacrifices his wife Abelina by killing her in her sleep. The professor, now a terrible evil spirit, takes refuge in the book of Kutu that he has written, cursing it: every time someone reads the book, they will be killed or become another undead possessed by the evil entity.

After some days, a thief visits the deserted cottage and steals the book. When he discovers that the book is under a heavy curse, he decides to abandon it on the ground in the forest. However, he will be the first to suffer the consequences of his act by being killed by the evil entity that now inhabits the forest near the cottage. A year later, the professor's cottage is rented by a girl named Rosy, eager to spend a weekend in peace after a severe depressive crisis. Along the forest path, she finds the book and, by reading it, she is attacked by the evil spirit and the roots of the trees in the forest. Manage to escape, the girl takes refuge in the cottage where she is found by her boyfriend in a serious psychological crisis. Rosy's boyfriend, Fabio, decides to lock her up in an institution and returns to the cottage to understand what happened to her. He finds the book of Kutu, reads it and decides to perform the bloody ritual. The evil spirit summoned by the ritual, instead of attacking Fabio, attacks a woman, Eleonor, who is camping by the river. The spirit attacks her while she is in her tent and kills her.

Meanwhile, Fabio continues his investigations inside the cottage and his attention is drawn by a phone call from a girl who asks for help and says she is in the attic of the cottage. Up in the attic, Fabio finds himself facing two undead possessed by the evil entity, one of whom is his girlfriend Rosy, while the other is the slain camper. Fabio also becomes possessed by the evil spirit when he is killed by the two monsters. After some days, a police officer is called to investigate the disappearance of Rosy and Fabio. The officer comes to the cottage but finds it deserted and abandoned, in a pitiful state. The cottage is rented out again for the second time. This time, a woman named Margaret is renting it and decides to move in. Margaret too will become acquainted with the three monsters that inhabit the cottage and the evil spirit that will end up possessing her.

 LA TRAMA DEL FILM

Il professore Archeologo Pedro Caranza scopre, nelle grotte sotto le rovine del tempio di Kut-Al-Amara nell’Iraq meridionale, delle antiche tavolette sumere appartenute all’antica setta di Kutu. Porta le tavolette presso il suo cottage, le traduce e riporta le traduzioni in un libro da lui scritto, che chiamerà il “libro di Kutu”. Affascinato da un rituale sanguinario e sacrificale riportato nelle tavolette, che da’ a chiunque lo faccia la possibilità di essere posseduto da un demone, il professore decide di effettuarlo e offre in sacrificio sua moglie Abelina uccidendola nel sonno. 

Il Professore, diventato un terribile spirito maligno, si rifugia nel libro di kutu da lui scritto, maledicendolo: ogni volta che qualcuno leggerà il libro verrà ucciso o diventerà anch’egli un morto vivente posseduto dall’entità malvagia. Dopo alcuni giorno un ladro fa visita al cottage deserto e ruba il libro. Quando scopre che su quel libro pende una grave maledizione decide di abbandonarlo a terra nel bosco. 

Tuttavia sarà il primo a pagare le conseguenze del suo gesto venendo ucciso dall’entità malvagia che ora abita il bosco vicino al cottage. Dopo un anno il cottage del professore è messo in affitto e viene affittato da una ragazza di nome Rosy, desiderosa di passare un week end in tranquillità dopo una grave crisi depressiva. Lungo il sentiero del bosco trova il libro e leggendolo viene attaccata dallo spirito malefico e dalle radici degli alberi del bosco. Riuscita a scappare la ragazza si rifugia nel cottage e viene trovata dal suo fidanzato in una grave crisi psicologica. 

Il Fidanzato di Rosy, Fabio, decide di rinchiuderla in un istituto e ritorna al cottage per capire cosa è successo a Rosy. Trova il libro di Kutu, lo legge, e decide di effettuare il rituale sanguinario. Lo spirito malefico richiamato dal rituale, anziché attaccare Fabio, attacca una donna, Eleonor, che stava facendo il campeggio in riva al fiume. Lo spirito l’aggredisce mentre è nella sua tenda e la uccide. Intanto Fabio all’interno del cottage prosegue le sue indagini e la sua attenzione viene richiamata da una telefonata di una ragazza che chiede aiuto e dice di trovarsi nella soffitta del cottage. 

Salito in soffitta Fabio si trova ad affrontare due morti viventi possedute dall’entità malvagia, una di queste è la sua fidanzata Rosy mentre l’altra è la campeggiatrice uccisa. Anche Fabio diventa posseduto dallo spirito malvagio quando viene ucciso dalle due mostruosità. Dopo alcuni giorni un poliziotto viene chiamato ad indagare sulla scomparsa di Rosy e Fabio. L’agente arriva al Cottage ma trova tutto quanto deserto e abbandonato, in un pietoso stato. 

Il cottage viene per la seconda volta rimesso in affitto. Questa volta ad affittarlo è una donna di nome Margareth che decide di trasferirsi per abitarci. Anche Margareth farà conoscenza delle tre mostruosità che lo abitano e dello spirito malvagio che finirà per possederla.
